Spring Garden Continues To Grow

Spring Garden was a dead zone 20 years ago and in 20 years from now it will be completely unrecognizable. The lower end of Spring Garden continues to grow with the official groundbreaking of a $160 million luxury apartment complex. A massive Whole Foods will be anchoring the building just off the Ben Franklin Parkway. Along with the Whole Foods there will be a CVS drugstore and a branch of the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. The new apartment complex will be extremely walkable, Center City, The Free Library and The Philadelphia Art Museum will be just a few steps away. The 14 story Rodin Square will sit northwest of the Rodin Museum where the area has changed dramatically in the past few years. It will also be walkable to Callowhill Street which in recent years has developed a small restaurant row with eateries such as Sabrina’s Cafe, King of Tandoor Indian Restaurant, Doma, Kite & Key, and the Rose Tattoo. Rodin Square will also be surrounded by the Barnes and green ball fields, making this area very desirable.

There are other plans in the works that will be near the apartment complex. A majestic Mormon temple is set to rise on 18th and Vine Streets and there are plans underway to develop the abandon Family Court building into a luxury hotel. The new project will include 293 luxury apartments, underground parking for a 55,000 square foot Whole Foods, and a parking garage for residents. This area was once a thriving industrial area which was home to trucking companies, tool corporations and storage businesses. Baldwin Locomotive Works which was the nations top train-maker called this area home for many years as well. Today at 19th and Hamilton stands the Matthias Baldwin Park which is green space composed of interlocking levels of plants, trees, and jutting Stone plinths. This area has seen an incredible transformation over the years and with this new project which is schedule to take around two years to finish will help the neighborhood continue to grow.
