A City Of Community Gardens

A City Of Community Gardens

Image title

Living in a city with no yard space does not mean you have to forgo having a garden where you can plant your veggies in the spring. Philadelphia is full of community gardens where you can have a plot of land to grow what your heart desires.

On South street just a few steps east of 9th street is a great garden where you can tell those who have plots there take great care of it. Passyunk Garden located on the corner of E Passyunk and Wharton is another great one and they offer community programs.

When I first moved to Philly I was lucky in finding a community garden at South and Broad streets. I grew a mix of vegetables, herbs and flowers and would visit my crops regularly to escape the rush of city living. Once a month it would be my turn to sit at the lot for an afternoon of filling water barrels, which were used by all to water our plots. Once I moved out of the neighborhood it was time to give up the plot to another lucky neighbor. That community garden unfortunately saw the end of its days a few years ago and in its place is not a condo building. These days a small second floor deck is where I grow my tomatoes and herbs come the warmer weather but I still think of my plot at the community garden.

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has a map of community gardens HERE
