The cold is finally over and it's time to enjoy the beautiful weather in one of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Pop Up Gardens! Aside from the 15th and South location, this year there will be a new Pop Up Garden in South Philly at 9th and Wharton. The lot across the street from Pat's Steaks will be transformed into an urban garden with honey locust trees, market lights, bean bag seating, and repurposed materials. The chefs from Cantina Los Caballitos and Royal Tavern will be providing the food, and craft beers, cocktails, and frozen punch will be offered to drink.
This corner has been the center of attention recently, as developer Paul Mirabello has proposed an 18-unit residential building with ground floor retail for this site. Neighbors in the area have had mixed feelings about it, especially because parking in this area is already difficult. No development can move forward, however, without zoning approval- the lot is currently zoned as single-family residential and this would have to be changed to mixed-use. In the meantime, at least for the summer, this long-abandoned lot will be turned into a magical space for us to enjoy.
