Be The Change

Be The Change

"We don’t set out to save the world; we set out to wonder how other people are doing and to reflect on how our actions affect other people’s hearts."- Pema Chödrön

No matter who you are you feel like the world is a little more broken every day. I know I feel this way, from wars around the world to the effect of modernization of society at large.  It's progress hurts some, and the unwillingness of change hurts others. What can we do to be a positive force in the world? How can we, so small of a person, be a great impact on the world and communities around us?  The answer is simple, the execution is difficult: GET INVOLVED. When I say "get involved" I don't mean run for office, per say. I mean do any action, whether it takes 30 seconds, or 30 years to complete, it is a scientific fact that nothing will take place without action.

Now it's easy for me to say this from behind the security of a computer screen, with a busy job as a realtor always able to make an excuse for how I can't make it to the gym, let alone change the world. But hear me out, I think it's possible and as we all know it's necessary.  Regardless of where you fall on the political, economic, social and religious spectrum, there is something you can do to change the outcome of the future of our story. There are small easy actions and larger more difficult actions. Here is my simple ways to spreading the cheer of  the season and continuing this throughout the year.

Show kindness always

This is something that takes no time.  We can always smile while we hold open a door, offer a seat on the train, or assist someone with directions.  These small moments, no matter how inconsequential, can be huge for people. I am sure you can remember having a terrible day, everything has gone wrong, but the person that helps you for just a moment is like an angel in denim.  These are small ways we can treat others as family regardless of who they are or where they come from, and it goes a long way. That happiness will spread like wildfire and you will be the spark.  It's a beautiful thing.

Take time to help others

As above, this is a way to use our strength and courage to lift others up.  Whether it be volunteering at a soup kitchen, tutoring or just being there to help someone through a tough time, our presence has gravity. We can give people a little bit of our strength, show them that there is always a reason to smile, and let them know they are invaluable and unique in their own way.

Educate but also listen

We owe it to humanity to be there as a voice of reason in trying times, a shoulder to cry on yes, but a solution to the problems of everyday living. What affects people varies greatly, but much of it can be boiled down to some simple issues once we talk them out with others, and that is another aspect of treating everyone like family.  Along with this, we must be willing to sit and listen to someone else's story, they probably have a lot to teach us about resilience, humility, growth and compassion. Never assume you know more than anyone, regardless of who they are or where they come from.  We are all here to help each other, and that is something we cannot forget.

Find what you are good at

What can we do better than most? How can we use our skills and expertise in a way that benefits others and isn't only self serving?  As a realtor, I have to be very creative in the ways I separate myself from the pack, and this has helped me understand what I am good at and let me amplify it through my business. Our talent is a gift, and we need to give that gift to those around us.  You have experience in remodeling from your own fixer-upper? Take one day a month to volunteer helping Habitat for Humanity or a similar housing agency build houses, kitchens or wheel chair ramps for those who cannot do it themselves. You are a financial and accounting whizz? Spend time at a local small business center and give lectures on how to make your first 5 years as a small business owner the best they can be! There are many ways we can use our talents to give back and easy ways to find access to those who need help.

Support a cause you believe in

Whether you are motivated by environmental issues, religious intolerance, the crumbling of public education, immigration and refugee crises there are many causes to support. Finding them is easy! We are lucky to live in a place like Philadelphia which is so diverse, inclusive, active with a history of community togetherness.  We simply plug into any one of these issues with donations, volunteering, consulting, teaching, or tutoring.  However you want to be involved, there is a great amount of impact you can supply.

Show up and be preset

From civic meetings and non-profit boards to time with friends and family, be there to make a difference, use your positivity, intelligence and light to help others. Even if your family is C-R-A-Z-Y, you can be there as a calming force.  Whatever you can do, do, and whatever you can't do, be OK knowing that someone else can fill that role.  Our job is not to be a catch-all humanitarian, our job is to be a small part of a larger story, and do what we can, when we can, in the way that serves best.

This is a very small sliver of a bigger picture, but a question myself and my friends have been asking is "What can I do?" and the answer is simple "You can do anything." So go out and make this world a better place and start by smiling and greeting the next person you see with sincerity, warmth and love.
