In the 19th
century, when the weather became hot and humid, Philadelphians would visit
refresh themselves in any number of neighborhood beer gardens. There would be beer, of course, food would be
available and it would be a place for family and friends to gather and get some relief from the heat.
Today, we can enjoy
this tradition in several new beer
gardens that are opening up for the summer.
Spruce Street Pier has plenty of seating by the river, fountains and
misters to keep you cool and even has a Boardwalk along the Delaware. IF you find yourself further up the river, by
the Ben Franklin Bridge, stop into Morgan’s Pier for cold drinks and a great
river view from the multi-level outdoor
seating area.
In Center City,
there are several new outdoor places to enjoy your favorite brew. Philadelphia Horticultural Society has a “Pop
Up” garden at 1438 South St, and this features a pleasant beer garden with seating
and food trucks in the evening. The garden
portion, featuring local plants and ideas for local gardeners opens at 11 each
day. The Beer Garden portion opens at 5
and remains open until 10 on week nights and midnight on weekends.
IF you find
yourself thirsty around Independence Hall, stop into the Independence Beer
Garden at 100 Independence Mall ( Rohm and Haas Building) You will have a great view of history and the
packs of tourists wandering about. This
should be open for business in mid July, so look for it.
Last year’s “Beach at Eakins Oval” proved to be very
popular, so a new version is being done this year. This year the oval will become a magic carpet
and will be the same family friendly place it was last year. This will also include a beer garden with
food trucks for your summer enjoyment
Hanging out in
Northern Liberties ?, head on over to the
ever popular Frankford Hall, just above Girard at 1210 Frankford Ave, probably the
best german style beer garden around!
