In case you haven't already heard the news, The Made in America Festival and Bruce Springsteen concerts are getting ready to take place this Labor Day weekend. Both events showcase Philadelphia as a premiere destination for live music and entertainment on a national level. Philadelphia is home to dozens of world class musicians and performers past and present, including Jill Scott, The Roots, John Coltrane and Chubby Checker just to name a few. With all of the talent and notable history the city has to offer, it also got me thinking about some of the great buildings that have been instrumental in shaping the music scene throughout the years. No matter what part of the city you live in, you are never more than a ten minute walk, bus or train ride to a great live music institution. Here is a list of just a few of my favorite places to watch a show in our great city:
Northern Liberties/Fishtown - Johnny Brendas - The second floor of this neighborhood bar/restaurant provides the backdrop for some of Philly’s most diverse and quality performances.
Old City - Tin Angel - This small, intimate room is booked months in advance and draws some of the best singer songwriters in the region. Have dinner downstairs before the show to be guaranteed a good seat for the performance.
Chinatown - The Trocadero - Personally one of my favorite rooms in the city. This former burlesque hall is the only 19th century Victorian theater still in operation in the United States. The Troc is currently host to some local independent and national acts as well as monthly movie nights in the Balcony.
Fairmount - North Star Bar - This corner bar is a hidden gem for people not familiar with the city but well known by music enthusiasts. I stumbled upon this place after listening to a new rock band on satellite radio and have been back for many shows since then.
Which venues or concert halls are on your list?
Cheers!
