I live in Germantown, which is Northwest Philly. It's north of Fairmount, south of Chestnut Hill and east of East Falls. We are known for our big old stone estates, relaxed urban vibe and our green space. I have a smallish backyard but do the best I can to invite wildlife. I have humming birds and butterflies, slugs and squirrels, bats and bunnies (yes sometimes bunnies.) I even one time watched a hawk devour a sparrow in my snowy backyard. And my block is pretty urban, people, right off of Germantown Ave. But. By far the coolest critters I have are these guys: snakes. I know what you are thinking; SNAKES!! How adorable! And you are right. They are cute and tiny and awesome. Every spring they hatch and take over the ivy on my maple tree. And the grass in my yard. And the bushes along my fence. And then right about this time of year they disappear. Poof. Gone! Where do they go? I'm not so sure, but it just goes to show that if you are on the look out you might be surprised as to what you can find in our own city. And for those of you who love urban wildlife, check out this Brooklyn based blog:
