Last Tuesday, the Fishtown Neighbors Association approved Michael Samschick’s Canal Street North project.
The Canal Street North project will be the first phase of the Penn Treaty Village, an entertainment center that brings revitalization to the many empty lots and buildings in that area. Currently a shuttered building on the corner of Frankford and Delaware Avenues, the Ajax Metal Company building will be transformed into an entertainment thoroughfare that will house a concert venue, bowling alley, restaurants, retail space, and a tasting room for local distillery Philadelphia Distilling. Also a part of this first phase will be the renovation of an adjacent vacant dry ice warehouse into a country western themed bar and grill. Live Nation will be managing the 3,000 person concert venue that will feature approximately 65 concerts a year.
Samshick’s vision to repurpose large unused buildings in this commercial dead space is greatly supported by Fishtown residents, being approved by a vote of 72-17.
