Changes at 22nd and Market

If you have recently walked around the corner of 22nd and Market, you will notice that things are happening.  The old "rated X" theater is now a pile of bricks, and the chinese take out place next door seems to be for rent.  The former gallery on the orner has been vacant for a very long time.  I think this corner will not be around long.

On the opposite side of 22nd the demolition notices are up on several buildings.  The only holdout is t he Salvation Army resale shop on the corner.  On the whole, this is good news.  but there are two buildings that are worth some thought.  THis first one is the little gem of a terra-cotta front mid block.  For years the front advertised "Live Girls", but the front of the building with it's cherubs, garlands and fancy columns hinted at a much more refined past.  This little bit of rennaisance Italy was always a note of style on a sleazy block.  The building next door has even more terracotta to view.  The second floor has great arched windows and fine early 20th century detailing.

Demolition has already started, but it would be nice if these two fronts could be incorporated into whatever is going to go up here.  Do we need yet another sterile glass front at street level?  One of the pleasures of walking in Philaddelphia is finding little gems like these richly detailed buildings that give grace to our streets.  So, check them out before they are gone for good.
