Changes in the Neighborhood

Changes in the Neighborhood

Having lived or worked in many neighborhoods in Center City over the last 28 years, I’ve seen a lot of changes.

I observed from the inside as Old City grew from an established art community with a few converted warehouses where landlords offered to pay you to sign a lease, to a thriving residential and commercial neighborhood w/ a boisterous night life. I saw the energy of the neighborhood change.

More recently I’ve watched from afar as business after business has opened in Passyunk Square. Turning it from a place I only pass through on my way home from a basket ball game or concert, to a place where I go to visit friends, eat, dine, and shop. Dramatic changes have taken place all over the city – I believe for the better!

Now, every day as I walk down 4th Street in Fabric Row, although I am sad to see some of my favorite fabric stores close, the empty windows are being filled with a range of products and services from shoe stores, vintage clothing stores, spas and most recently an art gallery. While the street is still anchored by Famous Deli and Essene, the organic food store, I’m anxious to see what will become of the neighborhood I call home.
