Daylight Saving Time

Daylight Saving Time

Yes, Spring is just around the corner when we'll enjoy longer, sunny and warm days. A true sign, is Daylight Saving Time when we set our clocks an our ahead, giving us that extra hour of sunlight. When is daylight saving time this year? Daylight savings, as it's colloquially called, returns this Sunday, March 9th at 2:00 am to Central New York and most of the United States. Remember to set your clocks ahead ("spring forward") by one hour to 3 a.m. if you stay up for the change, or update them before going to bed Saturday night. The switch will provide an extra hour of daylight in the evening, so the sun won't set Sunday until 7:04 p.m. But it also will mean that workers and school children who were getting used to getting up to daylight the past few weeks will again arise in the dark. Sunrise will come Sunday at 7:27 a.m. But why do we use Daylight Saving Time, anyway? An educational video explains the history of DST, first proposed by George Hudson in 1885 to give people more sunlight in the summer. The narrator explains how some technology (TVs, smartphones, etc.) has made changing our clocks somewhat an outdated practice that two U.S. states (Arizona and Hawaii) don't even follow due to excessive year-round sunlight. Also, don't forget to check your batteries. Experts advise using the spring and fall time changes as a way to remember to replace the batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms.
