Dilworth Park Now Open

Dilworth Park Now Open

This past Thursday the eagerly anticipated Dilworth Park opened to the public for the first time.  Since I was in Center City at the time, I decided to take a look at what was done.  The lawn area on the east side is not quite finished, but the rest is complete and ready for use.  When I was down there, the park was crowded with people of all ages enjoying this new space.  People were watching dance performances, listening to various bands and having a great time walking through the large ground level fountain.  There are plenty of places to sit, from large stone benches to the many café chairs and tables scattered around the park.
Swooping glass pavilions now clearly mark the entry point for the Market Frankford line and the rest of the underground transit system.  This is a great improvement over the dark and dank corridors of the old Dilworth Plaza.  The underground passage has been redone with bright contemporary tile, new turnstiles and clear signage.  The glass roofed stairs make the space bright and provide a dramatic entry to the park from the station.

The “Rosa Blanca” café is open in a very modern building off to the side.  This glass walled space provides a nice cool retreat on hot days and could become a popular lunch spot in the future.  I know it was very busy when I was there.

I am looking forward to the completion of the park in a few months, but I like what has been done so far.  If you have not yet seen what has been done, come down and take a look.
