Dilworth Plaza To Reopen September 4th

Dilworth Plaza To Reopen September 4th

It seems that the construction at Dilworth Plaza on the west side of city Hall has been going on forever.  Underground, it seems that subway exits have been blocked for years by plywood barricades.  In a matter of a few weeks, all will be revealed as the newly redesigned plaza will be open to use.
I am looking forward to the new space, and a new entry to the subway  / transit lines.  The old plaza was designed in the early 60's, and it looked impressive, in a monumental way.  The fountains and waterfall added life and movement to a vast expanse of grey granite.  There were trees and benches, but this was not a place to linger and enjoy the life of the city in.  The sunken plaza never really seemed to be used for anything,  usually it was empty except for blowing trash, dying bushes and the homeless.   For many, the last memories of the old plaza will be the "Occupy Wallstreet" encampment that took the space over.
With the new plaza, all of that is gone and buried.  The people of Philadelphia will have a new and spectacular space to enjoy.  Jose Garces is going to be running a small cuban inspired cafe ( anyone up for a cuban sandwich and a shot of coffee ?)  Instead of granite, there will be grass,  a glass pavilion will welcome one to the transit system and there will be trees and fountains, light and movement.  I am looking forward to seeing, and using,  this new and exciting place.  Now if something could be done about City Hall Station??
